The Browns and Raiders are getting ready to play the Next Man Up Bowl in a battle of limping 1-2 teams. The Browns will be without tight end David Njoku (ankle), left tackle Jedrick Wills (knee), right tackle Jack Conklin (hamstring) and running back Pierre Strong (hamstring) for the 4:25 p.m. kickoff in Allegiant Stadium. The Raiders will be without dynamic wide receiver Davante Adams (hamstring), defensive end Maxx Crosby (ankle), linebacker Divine Deablo (oblique), tight end Michael Mayer (personal reasons) and cornerback Decamerion Richardson (hamstring). Crosby is listed as doubtful; Las Vegas coach Antonio Pierce announced the Raiders’ emotional engine and producer of 14.5 sacks last season is out for the game. Crosby, Adams, Deablo and Mayer are all starters. Njoku and Wills would start for the Browns if they were healthy. Browns Pro Bowl right guard Wyatt Teller will miss the game with the Raiders and at least three more after being placed on injured reserve Sept. 25 with a knee injury. Wills missed the first two games of 2024 recovering from 2023 right knee surgery. He started against the Giants on Sept. 22 and injured the same knee, but it is not as serious as the one sustained last year. James Hudson will start at left tackle. Joel Bitonio will be back at left guard after finishing the game with the Giants at left tackle because of injuries to Wills and Teller. “I know we have options,” Coach Kevin Stefanski said Sept. 27 before the Browns boarded their chartered flight to Las Vegas with plans for a walk-through practice Sept. 28 in Las Vegas. “There are things that we can do based on who’s available.” The Raiders were two-point favorites according to the BetMGM Sportsbook before the Sept. 27 injury report was announced. The injuries to the key Las Vegas players caused a shift making the Browns 1.5-point favorites. Browns defensive end Myles Garrett is battling nagging foot, Achilles and thigh injuries, but he was not on the latest injury report. “He’s a warrior,” Browns defensive coordinator Jim Schwartz said. “He’s going to go out there and give it everything he has. He’s been limited. I mean, last year he got limited a little bit with the shoulder as he went down the stretch. But anything he’s able to do, he’s going to go out there and do it. When he’s on the field for us, he provides a big boost.” This is the start of a back-to-back-to-back road swing for the Browns. They play the Commanders in Washington, D.C., on Oct. 6 and then visit the Eagles a week later in Philadelphia. The Browns trailed the Cowboys, 20-3, at halftime and they trailed the Giants, 21-7, at intermission. Players on defense are determined to do their best to play better earlier so the offense doesn’t have to play from behind. “It’s all about execution,” Garrett said. “We just have to be where we’re supposed to be at the right time. And got to have better eyes and that’s all around the defensive 11. So, it’s just about us being who we know we can be. It’s just an expectation that we’ve had and we’re not living up to that.” The Browns on Sept. 15 led the Jaguars, 13-3, at halftime and went on to win, 18-13.
