A program at Perry Public Library will offer information on the Perry Township road and bridge renewal levy that appears on the Nov. 5 General Election ballot. The event, slated for 6 p.m. Oct. 1, is sponsored by the Friends of Perry Township levy committee. Perry Public Library is located at 3753 Main St. in Perry Village. Perry Township is seeking passage of a five-year, 2.9-mill renewal levy for roads and bridges. If the renewal levy passes, it would cost $83 annually for each $100,000 of property valuation, and raise $510,000 per year, according to the Lake County Auditor’s Office. Because the levy is a renewal, it will not raise taxes for Perry Township property owners. The levy is intended for general construction and the repair of roads and bridges in the township, not including Perry Village and North Perry Village. The levy originally was passed in 2019. Township government leaders stated that levy revenue was needed to offset tax losses from several sources: • The major reduction of public utility property taxes resulting from the devaluation of the Perry Nuclear Power Plant • The elimination of tangible personal property tax and inheritance tax by the State of Ohio. In addition to roads, other major expenses funded by this levy include Service Department salaries and benefits, truck and equipment costs, and maintenance and repair costs. Funds from the levy cannot be used for any other general fund purposes. Over the past five years, Perry Township has used more than $2.1 million in revenue from the levy to repave the community’s roads, said township Trustee Board Chairman Robert Dawson. “It is critical that we renew this levy to sustain our township as we know it,” Dawson said. “We have worked diligently to cut and control costs in Perry Township, and we respectfully request the taxpayer support of this renewal levy until such time that the Power Plant tax valuation increases.” As of Sept. 27, there were 4,484 registered voters in Perry Township, according to the Lake County Elections Board.
