Application fees for expedited border-crossing programs for pre-approved travelers, such as SENTRI and Global Entry, will change to $120 starting Tuesday, U.S. Customs and Border Protection announced. This is the first fee adjustment for such programs — which allow quicker inspections for enrolled travelers upon arrival to the U.S. — since 2008, officials said. CBP said that the change will enable the agency to “improve customer service through technology improvements, optimized processes, and expansion to additional ports across the northern border.” The agency has now set a uniform price for three border-crossing programs. Starting Tuesday, the Global Entry fee will rise from $100 to $120, while SENTRI will decrease from $122.50 to $120. The NEXUS program at the U.S.-Canada border will increase from $50 to $120. Enrollment is good for five years. In another change, applicants under the age of 18 will be free of charge if a parent or legal guardian is already a member, or concurrently applying, for the same SENTRI or Global Entry program, officials said. Prior to this, minors were charged the full Global Entry application fee, while there was a family option plan for SENTRI. Global Entry and SENTRI application fees include the registration of one vehicle. The $42 fee to add an additional vehicle after the initial application or renewal process remains the same. SENTRI lets travelers cross the border faster by using designated lanes at land ports of entry. The program is available for both vehicles and pedestrians. Global Entry is a similar program used at some international airports. Global Entry travelers have the ability cross in SENTRI lanes, and eligible SENTRI enrollees can use Global Entry kiosks at airports, as long as certain requirements are met. Interested individuals can apply online at ttp.dhs.gov. All applicants undergo a thorough background check and in-person interview.
