Michael Allman, the brash first-term San Dieguito Union High School District trustee now seeking re-election, is being investigated by state election regulators. The California Fair Political Practices Commission confirmed it opened an investigation into Allman’s election committee earlier this month based on a pair of complaints filed in June and July. “Please be advised that at this time we have not made any determination about the validity of the allegation(s) you have made or about the culpability, if any, of the person(s) you identify in your complaint,” commission officials told the complainant, a man named Bob Ayers. Allman, who has rankled district officials, fellow board members and union leaders throughout his term on the San Dieguito school board, downplayed the complaints as a tactic designed to drive him from public office. “Mr. Bob Ayers is a well known local agitator who has made it a hobby of his to file complaints against my campaign, so that he can then claim that there is an investigation,” he said by text message. “The FPPC has not found that I have violated any campaign finance rules.” Michael Allman, candidate for San Dieguito Union High School Board In his initial complaint, Ayers accused Allman’s campaign of failing to meet disclaimer rules in Facebook advertisements. The following month, Ayres submitted a second complaint alleging that Allman did not meet campaign reporting rules. “Mr. Allman knows the law and chooses not to follow it,” the complaint said. “He touts himself as an experienced businessman with strong ‘fiscal responsibility’.” The FPPC’s decision to investigate based on the complaints means enforcement officials completed a first-look review of the information and determined there was enough material to warrant investigating. The commission did not indicate when its probe may be completed. Two of the five seats on the San Dieguito Union High School District board are to be decided in the general election, Allman’s and that of Trustee Katrina Young. Allman, who survived an attempt at a recall campaign in 2021, is facing Kevin Sabellico on the Nov. 5 ballot.
