We came to Park City almost 20 years ago, drawn by the beauty and the appeal of this wonderful little mountain town. Since then, the Park City area has become mountain sprawl with clogged roads and crowded trails, and new housing built on every available parcel. The Summit County Council just released an outline of the master plan, negotiated behind closed doors, focusing on Dakota Pacific’s proposed development of the Tech Park in Kimball Junction. So much for transparency from our elected leaders! This represents a slap in the face to voters. An overwhelming majority of residents voiced extremely strong opposition to the project in the various public hearings just several months back. The council is telling voters that their opinion doesn’t matter; that the council members know better than the voting public what is best for Kimball Junction! It ignores the will of the people and is an arrogant move by the council. While the master plan is far from guaranteed to include all the features in the proposed design, and it is sprinkled with teasers such as senior housing, a new transit facility, underground parking, a centralized plaza and a “decorative pedestrian bridge” — all designed to convince the public that this proposal is substantially different than the approach shouted down by the public six months ago. And it calls for the county to spend $37 million for a number of things we never asked for and frankly we do not need.  Despite these bells and whistles, at its core the project remains a massive housing complex. All of the traffic issues remain. And there is the naïve comment regarding the council’s “hope” that by allowing the project to move forward, UDOT might be encouraged to decide as to which Kimball Junction improvement it will pursue. Kimball Junction’s transportation issues must be addressed by UDOT — we are hosting the Olympics in 2034. Seeing how construction work can drag out for years, the Tech Park could still be under construction at that time!!We are hopeful that voters will once again voice their opposition. Perhaps the council will actually listen to the voters this time around. Regardless, this is still a democracy — so whenever the council members come up for reelection, the voters should replace them with people who respect the will of the people.Larry and Susan AllevaPark City The post Secret master plan appeared first on Park Record.
