MONTGOMERY COUNTY, Md. (DC News Now) – Field of Screams Maryland has been held at the Olney Boys and Girls Club for more than 20 years, and it was named the Nation’s Top Haunted Attraction by USA Today two years ago. This year, the opening is being delayed due to permitting issues. Many neighbors who live near the Field of Screams sight said they had no idea opening night was canceled. Matias Illines said his kids go every year. “They always have fun there,” Illines said. “I’ve picked them up a couple times, and they have a good time, always.” Youth football team, Montgomery Village community reacts to shooting at game The opening delay is due to an ongoing permit dispute with Montgomery County’s Department of Permitting Services. The department said the haunted house and “slaughterhouse” that sit on the property have the required permits to operate, but other structures on the property have not been deemed up-to-code. Earlier this month, the Olney Boys and Girls Club was fined $2,000 and was warned of a $5,000 fine in December if they allow customers to use structures that are not in compliance. Some neighbors said it’s unfortunate because many people look forward to the experience each year. “Especially for the kids,” Illines said, “like stuff to do around here, there’s literally nothing to do besides, nothing.” Longtime Potomac restaurant closing at end of September But neighbors said the one thing they’re grateful they won’t have to deal with, at least for now, is the traffic Field of Screams brings. “At the time it starts,” Illines said, “If I need to go that way, I just go around. It’s different ways to go around.” DC News Now has reached out to the Olney Boys and Girls Club and the Department of Permitting Services for comment but has not heard back in time for publication.
