Class 5A 1. Cherry Creek (4-1) won vs. No. 8 Pine Creek, 21-14. Jayden Fox’s 58-yard rushing TD and Mason Kagarise’s 2-yard rushing TD gave Cherry Creek a 14-7 halftime lead. Then Fox had another TD midway through the fourth quarter to break a 14-14 tie. Bruins pass a stiff test from a tough Colorado Springs squad. Next week: at Cherokee Trail, 6 p.m. Oct. 5. 2. Mountain Vista (5-0) won at Overland, 55-6: The Golden Eagles returned the opening kickoff for a touchdown, part of a 49-0 first half that triggered a running clock, and didn’t look back en route to their first 5-0 start in 10 years. The Mountain Vista defense has now allowed six points or less in four of its five wins, with Thursday night’s Overland TD not coming until the game was well out of reach in the fourth quarter.  Next week: vs. No. 4 Valor Christian. 7 p.m. Oct. 4. 3. Columbine (5-0) won at 4A No. 10 Heritage, 44-7. The Rebels dominated their lower-classification Littleton foe to run their winning streak to 19 games. Mark Snyder’s 5-yard TD run on the opening drive got Columbine going, and James Basinger also had a couple of first-half scores en route to the easy win. Coach Andy Lowry’s squad is looking fine-tuned entering league play. Next week: at Denver East, 2 p.m. Oct. 5. 4. Valor Christian (5-0) won vs. No. 6 Ralston Valley, 34-17. Penn commit Mason Walters hit two field goals in the first half, then the Eagles got going via Dawson Olk’s long TD pass and Chase Hanosh’s 97-yard scoring run. Olk added a rushing TD in the third quarter as the Eagles pulled away, and his TD pass to Ben Herbek late in the fourth put the win on ice. Next week: at No. 2 Mountain Vista, 7 p.m. Oct. 4. 5. Legend (4-1) won vs. No. 9 Castle View, 30-0. The Titans’ physicality, which had them going toe-to-toe with Columbine a few weeks ago, was too much for the Sabercats. They were up 10-0 at the half and their defense didn’t give an inch, while the offense found its groove over the final two quarters. Next week: at No. 8 Pine Creek, 1 p.m. Oct. 5. 6. Ralston Valley (4-1) lost at No. 4 Valor Christian, 34-17. The Mustangs hung in there for much of the first half but got out-muscled by an Eagles team that’s already picked up several significant victories. A tough loss for RV, but they are still good enough to make a deep push when it counts the most. Next week: at No. 7 Chatfield, 7 p.m. Oct. 3. 7. Chatfield (5-0) won at Douglas County, 27-24. After DC’s loss to Castle View last week, Huskies head coach Eric Rice reiterated his belief that he has a playoff team. They looked the part on Friday, but couldn’t finish the job as Chatfield QB Cash Williams threw a 5-yard TD pass to freshman sensation Rome Bell to swing the lead to the Chargers late in the third quarter. Then the Chatfield defense shut out DC in the final frame. Next week: vs. No. 6 Ralston Valley, 7 p.m. Oct. 3. 8. Pine Creek (3-2) lost at No. 1 Cherry Creek, 21-14. The Eagles turned in an impressive performance against the powerhouse Bruins, who spent the first month of the season playing mostly out-of-state teams. It was 14-14 entering the final quarter. But 14 points is usually not going to beat Cherry Creek. Next week: vs. No. 5 Legend, 1 p.m. Oct. 5. 9. Castle View (4-1) lost at No. 5 Legend, 30-0. After an impressive rivalry win over Douglas County last week, Castle View suffers its first setback. The Sabercats’ defense did its job for most of the first half, but the offense was stuck in neutral. Next week: vs. Fruita Monument, 7 p.m. Oct. 4. 10. Fairview (5-0) won vs. Smoky Hill, 56-0. The Knights ran roughshod over the outmatched Buffaloes. Toray Davis’ rushing TD got them going, and Davis also had a TD receiving. Fairview had three TDs from Jordan Rechel, two on the ground and one via a pick-six. Wyatt Keegan contributed a punt return for a TD. Next week: vs. Prairie View, 1 p.m. Oct. 5. Class 4A 1. Palmer Ridge (4-1) lost vs. No. 6 Mesa Ridge, 31-28. Carson Campbell’s 5-yard TD run late in the first half gave the Bears their first lead, and then Campbell hit Magnus Newman for an 89-yard TD pass just 37 seconds before the break. Campbell also heaved another score to Zak Crisler to open the third quarter. But the Bears faltered late as Mesa Ridge erased a 10-point deficit with less than seven minutes left. Next week: vs. Air Academy, 7 p.m. Oct. 4. 2. Broomfield (4-1) lost vs. Erie, 13-3. Max Marchi’s 30-yard field goal gave the Eagles a 3-0 lead in the first quarter, but then Broomfield’s offense went dead silent after that. Way too many punts to beat the defending 4A champion-turned-5A Tigers. Next week: at Longmont, 7:30 p.m. Oct. 4. 3. Montrose (5-0) won at Fruita Monument, 35-12: The Red Hawks moved to 5-0 for the second time in four seasons after steamrolling to a 28-0 halftime lead and cruising from there. Montrose has scored 35 points or more in all five wins this season, outscoring opponents by an average margin for 29.6 points. Next week: at Falcon, 6 p.m. Oct. 4. 4. Pueblo West (5-0) won at No. 7 Vista Ridge, 35-7. The Cyclones’ running game controlled the tempo early and often, and Pueblo West also got big plays from QB Gavin Ray Lockett and running back Zach Duran that resulted in first-half scores. Rudy Gutierrez added another TD on the ground in the second half. Next week: at Doherty, 6:30 p.n. Oct. 3. 5. Dakota Ridge (4-1) won vs. Cherokee Trail, 31-13. The Eagles lost their season opener to Chatfield, but now have the wind at their backs with four straight wins, three of which came by double-digits. Next week: at Ponderosa, 7 p.m. Oct. 4. Late game. 6. Mesa Ridge (4-1) won at No. 1 Palmer Ridge, 31-28. Bryce Riehl had another great game at QB, including an 80-yard screen pass to Anthony Smith that went for a TD right off the bat. Then the Grizzlies’ fourth-quarter comeback was underscored by more big passes by Riehl, as well as a pair of fourth-quarter interceptions by Chris Hinojosa. Statement win for Mesa Ridge. Next week: at Widefield, noon Oct. 5. Vista Ridge (3-2) lost vs. No. 4 Pueblo West, 35-7. The Wolves’ defense just couldn’t get off the field in critical moments. By the time Gabriel McFarland ripped off a 61-yard rushing TD late in the second half, it was way too late. Next week: at Liberty, 6 p.m. Oct. 3. 8. Riverdale Ridge (5-0) won at Silver Creek, 28-14. Silver Creek took a 7-0 lead after one, but the Ravens showed mettle. A kick return for a TD late in the third quarter was the momentum-shifter, and the Riverdale Ridge defense got second-half stops when it needed to. Next week: at Skyline, 7 p.m. Oct. 4. 9. Grand Junction (4-1) lost at Durango, 38-7. Grand Junction’s promising start got checked by the Demons. The game was tied 7-7 late in the first quarter, and it was 14-7 Durango at the half. Then Durango used special teams — including a 44-yard field goal by Dylan Burns and a blocked punt — to jump-start the rout. Next week: Gateway, 7 p.m. Oct. 4. 10. Heritage (2-3) lost vs 5A No. 3 Columbine, 44-7. Hat tip to the Eagles for scheduling the 5A juggernaut Rebels. Two of Heritage’s three losses so far came to 5A teams, as the Eagles also lost to Arapahoe. That will mold them for conference play, and for a possible run come November.
