ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. (KRQE) – In an effort to bring more housing to the city, and revitalize old unused buildings, Albuquerque city leaders are looking to help developers by reducing red tape and offering cash incentives. "We have thousands of units that we have to build to really be on par with the need and demand out there for housing," said CABQ Metro Redevelopment Agency Director Terry Brunner. In their latest request, the city said they want developers to create project proposals that focus in areas around Central Avenue, Downtown around 2nd and 4th Street, and other parts of town that need revitalization. "If people have an idea for a building they have, and conversion, those are the types of projects we're looking for," Brunner said. Chimayo Chile becoming rarer as fewer farmers stick with tradition The city said they're putting up $4 million in incentives for developers, which could go to multiple projects, depending on the size. However, at least 20% of the building would need to be considered "affordable housing" by federal standards. "That level will vary based on how many people are in that apartment," Brunner explained. Moving forward, they're looking to fill two vacant lots along San Mateo and Kathryn as well and are asking for input from developers on what they would like to build in the area. They've already received several responses for ideas. "Some have proposed a grocery store. Some have proposed retail, non-profit space," Brunner added. "So, they're really thinking creatively about more than just an apartment complex but with some amenities with it." If approved, city leaders said the request projects with the $4 million incentive could begin as soon as spring of 2025.
