HONOLULU (KHON2) -- Prone to losing your canoe, kayak or surfboard while in the ocean? This sticker might help you find it or even save your life. Download the free KHON2 app for iOS or Android to stay informed on the latest news The Division of Boating and Ocean Recreation, Hawaii Ocean Safety Team and U.S. Coast Guard created the "Scan if Found" sticker. These stickers can be placed on your ocean equipment. When scanned, first responders can see who the equipment belongs to and determine if a search is needed. Ocean Safety’s first-ever facility to be built at Kailua Beach Park According to H.O.S.T. Chairman Gabriel Nelson, when recreational gear is found, the U.S. Coast Guard launches a search-and-rescue investigation to search for the individual they believe is in distress. "That ends up looking like millions of dollars spent on search and rescue cases because when the first responders get the hint that there might be somebody in the water, they immediately launch into action, they don’t want to wait," Nelson explained. Each sticker has a unique number that is registered to the owners. If an item is found, the Coast Guard can attempt to contact the owner before launching an investigation. “I could scan your code and then I’d be able to send you an anonymous message saying, ‘Hey I found your dive float it’s here in the park, I put it behind the bush’ or ‘Hey I found your dive float contact me, cause I’d like to help you get it back.'"
