EL PASO, Texas (KTSM) -- No one expected this, except maybe the players and coaches inside the Andress High School football program. A week after taking it on the chin in a 54-8 loss to Northeast rival Chapin, Andress came up with what may have been the biggest effort of the young season, beating undefeated Hanks 49-42 in overtime in front of a homecoming crowd at Andress High.. "Resillient. We have a resillient bunch of kids," Andress football coach Chris Taylor said. "We have a bunch of fight in them. Coaches, kids, nobody was happy about the Chapin result. But we came back and went to work (last) Saturday morning and kept beliving in one another and stuck with it." With 1:57 left in the fourth quarter, Hanks took its first lead of the game when sophomore quarterback Jordan Morales hit Alex Robles for an 18-yard touchdown. That gave Hanks a 42-35 lead. It seemed like Hanks was heading to a hard-fought, come-from-behind win. But Andress' own sophomore quarterback Jamari Milton hit Mikeil Taylor for 37-yard touchdown with 1:07 to go in regulation. That knotted the score at 42-42 and sent the contest to overtime. There, Milton hit freshman Aavant Clayton a 17-yard touchdown for the win. The Andress defense held off Hanks when the Knights got the ball in their half of ther first overtime period and kept them from scoring. Morales just missed converting a fourth-down touchdown to tie the game up again and send it into a second overtime, a play that was out of bounds by mere inches. "I don't know how many of these I can take," Taylor said, when asked if he thought this might be the game of the year. "Hanks has a good football program. They are well-coached. They did a good job. It is one of those where you hate to see someone actually lose. Both teams kept fighting. At the end, it came down to making a play." Andress scored on its first possession of the game on a 1-yard run by Marcus Wilson and they kept the pressure on for most of the game. Twice in the first half, Andress went up by two touchdowns. But Hanks wouldn't go away, either. Hanks went into halftime down 28-21 and twice tied it up in the second half, but didn't take its first lead until 1:57 left in the game. That set up all the dramatics going down the stetch and into overtime. For Andress, Milton and Clatyon hooked up for three touchdown passes, including the game-winner. Clayton also had a 1-yard touchdown run in the first half. For Hanks, Morales and Robles hooked up for five touchdown passes. Andress is now 2-3 overall and 2-1 in District 1-5A Division II. Hanks fell to 3-1 overall and 1-1 in district.
