The Austin football team couldn’t find a spark late in the contest as it fell short against Faribault by a score of 28-14 on Homecoming night in Art Hass Stadium Friday. The Packers (0-5 overall) started the third quarter on a high note as sophomore quarter Jamison Bastyr found Jamal Faux in the back corner for a 24-yard touchdown strike to put Austin up 14-8. However, the Falcons took control on the first play of the next drive as Nolan Vogelsberg ran free for an 87-yard TD catch from Oliver Shoop to put the Falcons up 16-14. “It was a good effort and we can’t hang our heads about that,” Austin head coach Ed Schmitt said. “We just have to make the plays and be in position where we need to be. They made a couple of plays that we didn’t and that’s part of the game.” Faribault (3-2 overall) put the game away when it sacked Austin for a safety to set up a 54-yard TD run by Jayden Hart. The Packers’ best chance to gain steam came in the first half. After converting two third and 15s on their opening drive, Austin took a 7-0 lead on an eight yard TD run by Garlo Gee and the Packers were looking to add to that lead at the end of the first half. Austin had a third and short near Faribault’s 20-yard line late in the half, but it was stopped two plays in a row. Faribault responded with a big drive that was capped by a 16-yard TD catch by Vogelserg as time expired in the first half. Had the Packers converted a fourth and one on their possession, they may have been up two scores at halftime. “The fourth down was on me,” Schmitt said. “I should’ve called a timeout.
