The Kirtland football team earned another lopsided win Sept. 27, but sustained a major loss along the way. Coach Tiger LaVerde confirmed to The News-Herald his son and junior starting quarterback Jake LaVerde sustained a broken left wrist and will miss an extended period of time. The injury happened in the second quarter of the Hornets’ 65-16 win over visiting Fairview. LaVerde was injured making a tackle and was taken to the hospital via ambulance. Coach LaVerde confirmed “both bones are broken” in his son’s wrist. “We’ve just got to go with next man up,” the Hornets’ coach said. “It’s part of the game. It’s not fun, but it’s part of the game. We trust the kids who have played a lot in our program. Max Paul has played a lot of good football for us over the years. He’s going to be the guy now.” Prior to departing the game, Jake LaVerde had rushed for 90 yards and a touchdown, giving him 941 yards on the ground this season. Danny Alfieri ran for 171 yards and three touchdowns to lead Kirtland (6-0) in the win over Fairview. Tyler Turk, Sebastian Becker, Tommy Caimi and Niki Samac also scored on the ground for the Hornets as part of Kirtland’s 474-yard rushing attack. Fairview was held to negative-21 yards rushing, but threw for 264 yards, much of which came with the outcome of the game had long been decided. Kirtland will face Berkshire (5-1) in Week 6. • NDCL set a program record by scoring 42 points in the first quarter en route to a 63-14 win over Howland. NDCL (4-2) scored six touchdowns on its first eight offensive plays, with Angelo Tamburrino scoring twice in the first quarter and Ryan Lipowski rushing for a score and passing for a score in the first 12 minutes. It was 56-7 at halftime and the Lions cruised from there. • Fairport piled up 457 yards of offense in a 43-14 pillaging of Grand Valley, spoiling the Mustangs’ homecoming. Abraham Castellano carried 20 times for 227 yards and Brady Lawson passed for 154 yards to spearhead the Skippers’ attack. Yomar Castellano had 10 receptions for 106 yards. • Jordan Johnson scored on a four-yard run with less than a minute remaining to lift Hawken to a 21-17 win over West Geauga. Johnson ran for 99 yards for the game and also caught a touchdown pass for the Hawks (5-1). Donovan Moorhead threw for 116 yards and two scores for the Hawks. West Geauga (2-4) got a touchdown run from Joseph Moore and a touchdown pass from Finn Keenan to Dominic Paros. • Bryce Peet ran for 159 yards and a touchdown, part of Geneva’s 441-yard rushing attack, in the Eagles’ 48-0 win over Edgewood. Perhaps most impressively, Geneva (5-1) held Edgewood to ONE yard of offense, giving up 25 yards passing while holding Edgewood to negative-24 yards rushing. • Chagrin Falls blanked Crestwood, 28-0, behind Jacob Kay’s 212-yard night passing and a staunch defensive effort that kept Crestwood out of the end zone. Jack Gellin ran for 80 yards for Chagrin. • Walsh Jesuit got past Benedictine, 20-12, to improve to 6-0. Benedictine falls to 4-2 with the loss. • Berkshire retained the Kinsman Cup with a 49-6 win over Cardinal. • Carter Hopkins ran for two touchdowns and Walter Moses hit Luke Sivon with two touchdown passes as Perry beat Lutheran West, 41-14, to improve to 5-2.
