American Theatre magazine, published daily online and quarterly in print by Theatre Communications Group (TCG) – the national organization for theatre founded in 1961, with a membership of more than 700 theaters and affiliate organizations and over 7,000 individuals – has released its lists of Top 10 Most-Produced Plays and Top 20 Most-Produced Playwrights for the new 2024-25 season. The statistics are based on the season’s programming of 1281 productions submitted by 305 TCG’s member theaters, as well as 176 productions from Broadway, commercial, or non-member theaters. Rajiv Joseph and Kate Hamill are tied with eighteen total productions each for the most-produced playwright in the current season, and What the Constitution Means to Me by Heidi Schreck is the most-produced play for the second year in a row, with a total of sixteen productions, making it one of only three plays since TCG started counting in 1994 (with a hiatus during the 2021-22 season due to COVID shutdowns) that has been #1 for two years running, along with John Patrick Shanley’s Doubt in 2007 and 2008, and Yasmina Reza’s Art in 2000 and 2001. Other returning favorites include James Ijames’s Fat Ham, Jeffrey Hatcher’s new spin on Frederick Knott’s Dial M for Murder, and The Play That Goes Wrong by Henry Lewis, Jonathan Sayer, and Henry Shields. In a joint statement, TCG Co-Executive Directors Emilya Cachapero and LaTeshia Ellerson said: “We understand the role and power that theatre has in holding a mirror to society, so it’s no surprise that during this critical election year that What the Constitution Means to Me by Heidi Schreck tops the list for a second year.” Schreck noted, “It’s thrilling to have this honor in a moment when people are so energized and passionate and feel like they can take their democracy into their own hands. And I hope everyone will get out and VOTE this November.” Photo courtesy of TCG.
