SPRINGFIELD, Mass (WWLP) - Local and state officials as well as Square One leaders, staff and even a few kiddos went to the site of the old Square One building in the South End for the announcement of a special gift. Recently, Balise Auto donated $1 million dollars and on Friday, the MassMutual Foundation announced another $1 million dollar grant for a rebuilding project. MassMutual Foundation President and CEO, Dennis Duquette said they are happy to support Square One with their mission. State Line Propane and Oil opens a show room in Westfield "This is a dream come true" said Square One President and CEO, Dawn DiStefano. Some of the Square One children put on their construction vests and helmets and visited the construction site of the new Square One center. The site used to be home to the Square One center until it was destroyed in the 2011 Tornado that hit western Massachusetts. The new 26,000 square foot building will have indoor and outdoor learning areas and will cost about $15.5 million. Now, with some help from the state and community, they are rebuilding. Square One said both the city and state made early commitments to help and also private funders are a big help. "It wonderful to be able to support the children and their parents, remember the parents are very important too because they are working, they are building a great future for those kids and their families and Square One makes that all possible" said MassMutual Foundation President and CEO, Dennis Duquette. Square One said they are happy to be back home on the site where their old building used to be watching their new one be built which will be able to help more children and more families. "It is reclaiming and coming home, but it is also the pride we have that we reflect the community" said DiStefano. The non-profit organization will be able to help more families and children when this center opens up. "We will be serving 80 children at this site. We will be serving hundreds of families. Meeting the needs of not only the South End community, but the entire greater Springfield community" said DiStefano. The center is set to open in the spring of 2025. The Square One campaign is currently about $2 million dollars shy of their goal.
