The Park City Planning Commission and others at a meeting Wednesday evening evacuated the Marsac Building after a warning sounded. It was an extraordinarily uncommon event and was determined to be a false alarm. An electronic voice could be heard over a loudspeaker indicating there was an active threat alarm in effect. It also appeared to say the police were on their way. The online broadcast of the meeting at a little bit after 8:30 p.m. showed an empty Park City Council chambers with the electronic voice continuing to repeat the message. The Planning Commission was amid a lengthy meeting when the warning sounded. Members returned to the room shortly after leaving. Chatter in the room seemed to indicate an alarm was inadvertently triggered, and city officials said later it was a false alarm. The municipal government the next day declined to provide details, including:• Whether the alarm inadvertently triggered in the City Council chambers and, if so, how it occurred.• Whether there was anyone else in the building who evacuated other than the people at the Planning Commission meeting.• How it was determined to be a false alarm. The chair of the Planning Commission, Sarah Hall, said the alarm initially appeared to be false and part of a training exercise or an accidental triggering. The alarm sounded as the panel was discussing a concept for the redevelopment of the land where the DoubleTree by Hilton Hotel Park City – The Yarrow is located. It was a “very benign portion of the meeting,” Hall said. “Everyone knew everybody,” she said, adding she recognized everyone who was present at the time and there was “no indication in the room anything was wrong.”There is sometimes sparse attendance at Planning Commission meetings. The redevelopment of the DoubleTree by Hilton Hotel Park City – The Yarrow location is a prominent project that has drawn interest from the public, but the Planning Commission process has attracted only a limited number of people to meetings. “There was no public in the room. It was the very end of the meeting,” Hall said. The episode at the Planning Commission meeting on Wednesday provided a rare glimpse at security measures at the Marsac Building. City Hall over time is believed to have instituted a range of upgrades designed to increase the security of the Marsac Building and other municipal facilities. Officials typically do not provide details in public settings in order to avoid disclosing sensitive information. It is believed closed-door briefings centered on security-related topics are occasionally provided. The Planning Commission is seen as ranking second in importance only to the City Council among the various City Hall boards and commissions. The panel holds the authority to approve or reject a wide range of development applications. Planning Commission meetings can draw large crowds when significant projects are under review, such as those at the base areas of the mountain resorts. The talks about the redevelopment of the location of the DoubleTree by Hilton Hotel Park City – The Yarrow are expected to continue in October. The alarm on Wednesday did not impact the timeline. The post Park City meeting temporarily cleared as false alarm sounds during talk about hotel project appeared first on Park Record.
