PROVIDENCE, R.I. (WPRI) — After three days of witness testimony and evidence, two Providence men will remain held without bail in connection with last month’s deadly shooting that claimed the life of a 7-year-old girl. Ahmari Cabrera, 19, and Shaheem Nathaniel, 26, are accused of shooting at a car on Florence Street on the night of Aug. 29, leading to the death of Ny’Eil Pires. The two men face 11 charges, including first-degree murder, and were ordered held without bail on Tuesday, Sept. 3. During a three-day bail hearing, witnesses said the incident began at a 7-Eleven in Providence, where Ny'Eil's father, Nelson Pires, allegedly exchanged words with Nathaniel outside the store and later followed his car to a party. Although the courtroom did not permit video or audio recordings, footage presented in court appeared to show Nelson’s car speeding toward Cabrera and Nathaniel, who were standing outside. VIDEO: Security footage shows events leading up to shooting that killed 7-year-old Prosecutors said that’s when Cabrera and Nathaniel jumped out of their vehicle and opened fire on Nelson’s car, striking Ny’Eil, who was seated in the back. She died at the hospital a few days later. Prosecutors argued that Cabrera and Nathaniel are "wannabe gangsters" who had a premeditated plan to kill Nelson, saying the men, who were armed with ghost guns and wearing ski masks, continued to fire even as Nelson tried to flee. Defense attorneys requested bail, arguing the suspects acted in self-defense in response to Nelson’s alleged aggression and questioned whether first-degree murder was the appropriate charge. However, the judge sided with the state, citing evidence of Cabrera and Nathaniel’s "reckless" actions. Nelson is also being held on $50,000 surety bail for two counts of child endangerment and one count of driving with a suspended license.
