NEW BEDFORD, Mass. (WPRI) — A New Bedford man was sentenced to jail for assaulting his girlfriend and breaking a glass door in a "drunken rage," Bristol County District Attorney Thomas Quinn III announced Friday.
Dana Santos, 34, convicted at trial of assault and battery and malicious destruction of property.
On June 16, Santos and his girlfriend were at a tavern in New Bedford. According to Quinn, Santos got upset when he was cut off and threatened to shoot the bartender and the owner.
After Santos was escorted out of the bar and the front door was locked, Quinn said he punched the door, breaking the glass, then hit his girlfriend in the head and pushed her into the broken door when she tried to calm him down.
"The defendant was drunk and totally out of control, and committed serious acts of violence," Quinn said in a press release. "He has lengthy criminal history and clearly continues to be a danger to the community."
Santos received a two-and-a-half year sentence, with 18 months to serve in county jail and the remainder suspended with three years of probation.
