SOUTHAMPTON COUNTY, Va. (WAVY) -- A tornado was spotted on radar Friday afternoon in Southampton County as the region faces tornado warnings due to the remnants of Helene. The likely tornado was confirmed via tornado debris on radar, per WAVY's weather team. It touched down near Corinth and may have lifted after touching down, but the system was moving north toward Route 460 and Wakefield. The area was under a tornado warning through 5 p.m. A large portion of the area meanwhile remains under a flash flood warning. There's also a tornado warning in effect across the state line around Gatesville, with a tornado warning in that area until around 5:30 p.m. WAVY's team says radar showed some rotation there. If you're under a tornado warning, head to the interior of your home and stay away from windows. Cover your head with something like a helmet if possible. A tornado also touched down Friday in Rocky Mount, North Carolina, as Helene moved through the southeast, leaving 15 people hurt. Helene overall's caused widespread damage and flooding throughout the southeast and greater eastern U.S., and has left more than 40 people dead.
