Ben Singleton was starting his usual morning routine, sitting in his car, waiting to take his children to school when an unexpected and terrifying situation unfolded.A black car pulled up with two young guys in it, and they opened my car, Singleton recalled. According to police, the suspects were involved in a carjacking in Milwaukee earlier that day and had moved on to West Allis.Once they saw someone in the car, they quickly drove off, Singleton said.Instead of letting them go, Singleton made a decision he now regretshe followed the suspects.Watch: West Allis man shot at after attempted carjacking West Allis man shot at after attempted carjackingI approached them, and I guess I spooked them because they didnt expect anyone to pull up on them. Thats when they took off, Singleton explained.As the suspects sped away, the situation escalated dramatically.They hit a couple of cars on the side of the street, and as their car got messed up, they jumped out and started shooting at me, Singleton said.The sound of gunshots echoed through the neighborhood. My nerves were shot. It was scaryI just tried to get out of there, Singleton said, reflecting on the terrifying moment.Thankfully, he did escape, and shortly after, police located and arrested the suspects.Thank God I got out of that situation, he added. Its just crazy in this world today. It can happen that fast. Singleton moved to the area to escape violence, but after this traumatic experience, he admits he now wishes he had simply called the police instead of taking matters into his own hands.When asked how he plans to move forward and find peace in his neighborhood, Singleton sighed and responded, I dont know. Thats a good question... I dont know.The West Allis Police Department says they aren't looking for any additional suspects.West Allis detectives and officers, along with Milwaukee Police detectives, continue to work the case, the news release says.
