OVERLAND PARK, Kan. -- Overland Park police are investigating after they say a homeowner shot at a suspected arsonist before daybreak on Friday. OPPD says this happened around 3:50 a.m. near W. 158th Terrace and Woodson where the homeowner became suspicious after seeing someone in a white compact car park in front of their house on Outlook Street. Police say whoever was in the car was wearing a mask and walked toward the backyard of a neighboring house, and the homeowner who reported the incident heard glass break and saw flames coming from that house. Twin sisters charged in Belton armed carjacking Gunshots were also heard shortly after the fire. "We heard three popping sounds early this morning around 3:45/3:50. We came out to investigate,” a woman who lives in the area said. She did not want to be identified. “It’s really unsettling knowing this person is potentially still out there hiding. We want security to increase on our own home and around the neighborhood." Another neighbor told FOX4 the gunshots were stunning. “My wife woke me up in the middle of the night, between 3:50-4:00 a.m., she said she heard some loud noise, some sort of explosion, or even a gunshot. I remember her saying that specifically. At first, I was like there’s no way there’s a gunshot, not in this neighborhood,”another resident, Tom Flanagan, who also lives in the neighborhood shared. “From my understanding, somebody tried to light the house on fire. The homeowner confronted them. The person ran off and one of my neighbors tried to confront them as well.” Neighbor Dave Tschirhart said he saw the suspect and tried to stop him. "I woke up to go work out in the morning and I noticed a car where it shouldn't be. I thought maybe he was trying to steal one of my vehicles and I waited for a minute and I saw him messing around, and he went by the pond and something didn't look right, so I went and put a sweatshirt on and grabbed my pistol and waited patiently, and heard some breaking of glass," Tschirhart recalled. Kansas City man accused of having devices that turned firearms into weapons of war "And I still waited patiently, and then when I saw him light that fireball up, I lost it. I tried to get him to get on the ground and he wouldn't do it.” Tschirhart said he aimed for the suspect’s tires, in hopes of disabling the their vehicle, until police could arrive. "He sped past me. I had to make sure I wasn’t hit and there wasn’t anybody in the car shooting at me,” he said. Tschirhart said he then called police and told them what happened, and immediately went to the home that the suspected arsonist lit on fire. "I just hope the family is okay,” Tschirhart added. “Nobody deserves to have their house set on fire.” Police say the Overland Park Fire Department responded and put out the small fire. Police are looking for the arson suspect and ask anyone who has information that will help them solve this case to call the department at (913) 344-8742 or the TIPS Hotline at (816) 474-TIPS.
