NORTHEAST IND. (WANE)— Crews from northeast Indiana power companies and volunteers from the American Red Cross are heading south to aid in cleanup efforts in Hurricane Helene's wake. Northeastern REMC sent four linemen and several trucks to the Atlanta metro area. They left Whitley County around 1 p.m. on Thursday and started working on restoring power early Friday morning. Director of Marketing and Communication for Northeastern REMC, Chris Todd, said before restoring power, the linemen have to make sure the area is safe. Mid-October date set for construction of new Allen County Jail on Meyer Road "You have to get the trees out of the way," Todd said. "You have to get the wires off the ground. You have to replace broken poles. And then you basically rebuild it as if it were new." Indiana Michigan Power sent 180 workers and 40 trucks from across their service area to Atlanta as well. I&M spokesperson Schnee Doyle said workers will be sent to other areas in need across the state from there. "Crews will work 16 hour days doing work just like they would at home," Doyle said. Dale Vollenweider, a 10-year volunteer with the American Red Cross of Northeast Indiana, is heading to their disaster headquarters in Tallahassee, Fla. for at least two weeks. He returned from response efforts to Hurricane Debby in Tallahassee a little bit more than a month ago. Vollenweider is one of 10 disaster responders being sent form northeast Indiana. "I will be leading a team of 30 truck drivers who will be crisscrossing the state to provide disaster supplies to the various shelters that have been set up across Florida," Vollenweider said.
