ISLE OF PALMS, S.C. (WCBD) – People who have gone above and beyond to help others are being recognized this week. The first takes us to Isle of Palms. You have probably heard the story by now: back on September 14, a couple following their GPS accidentally drove into Morgan Creek at the Isle of Palms Marina. Johnny Himmesbach works at the restaurant Islander 71, which is next to the boat ramp. He did not hesitate and jumped into the water immediately to rescue the couple from their car that was sinking. Others from the restaurant also helped. Himmelsback was honored this week with the Isle of Palms Signal 30 Award. It’s a special citizen service award – and this is only the 11th time it has been given in the last 22 years. “It's a really cool adjective. I appreciate it. It looks cool. And for my name. But the real heroes in the world are the men and women of our armed forces. Gentleman in the back. Police, Fire, EMT, nurses and our teachers. So those are our heroes. But thank you very much.” Speaking of heroes, plenty of them were in town and aboard the USS Laffey this past week. It was a three-day reunion with some of the veterans who served on the “Ship that would not die.” The brave men who served on the ship helped preserve our freedom. The Laffey provided support to the D-DAY invasion at Normandy and was also in the Pacific Theatre during World War II and survived kamikaze attacks. It eventually came to Patriots Point in 1978. The ship and its proud veterans who served on it participated in several activates during the three-day invasion. It was also another chance for people to say “thank you” for their service.
