BATON ROUGE, La. (BRPROUD) — A popular Baton Rouge restaurant that offers counter-serve classic breakfast and daily soul food plate lunches was named one of America's 50 best restaurants by the New York Times. Zeeland Street was featured in the New York Times' "The Restaurant List 2024." Zeeland Street was one of two Louisiana restaurants to receive the recognition. Acamaya, a Mexican restaurant in New Orleans, was also featured in the annual list. The New York Times said, "Over the last 12 months, reporters and editors traveled to nearly every state scouting restaurants for our annual list. This year, it was about spaces as much as places." This recognition comes as Zeeland Street owner Stephanie Phares, who has dedicated 30 years to feeding the community, was recently "diagnosed with Stage 3A lung cancer," according to a social media post. In the post, it said Phares will be doing chemotherapy and radiation over the next year. Get a taste of German culture with food, beer and games at Baton Rouge Oktoberfest Varsity Sports hosted a fundraiser in August to help Phares with her cancer treatment. The money raised from the event went toward her medical bills and to Zeeland Street employees. Zeeland Street offers a breakfast and lunch menu, including array of lunch plates, sandwiches and salads. Daily specials include Mama's pot roast, pecan smoked brisket, red or white beans over rice, grilled black drum plate, grilled black drum salad and Zeeland Street vegetable plate. The restaurant is at 2031 Perkins Road, Baton Rouge. Hours of operation are 7:30 a.m. to 2 p.m. Monday-Saturday, according to the restaurant's website.
