COLUMBUS, Ohio (WCMH) -- Central Ohioans are helping in the southeast in the aftermath of Hurricane Helene. Search and rescue teams from all over the country are in the region lending a hand. Ohio Task Force 1 (OH-TF1) is one of those teams. Two Ohio State University Wexner Medical Center doctors, including Dr. Nicholas Kman, are on the task force. Watch: Crews helping with Helene recovery “The storm surge, water carries with it so much capacity to damage structures that I think we expect to see that once we start moving," Kman said. Kman is the medical team manager of the task force. When he talked with NBC4 Friday morning, the task force was north of Tampa Bay. Wildlife agency asks residents to report deer behaving abnormally to track disease “Our job as a federal asset is to come in and help the local teams and what we heard from them is that there are a lot of people that had to wait out the storm on the roof of their house because the storm surge was so strong," Kman said. The task force started working overnight and made several stops by late morning. Kman said they go from property to property looking for victims and helping those in need. Another focus in the southeast is getting the lights back on. The storm knocked out power for at least 4 million people. J.J. Savage and a team from Westerville Electric are among the crews working on power restoration in Florida. “Honestly it's the rewarding part of our job is when you put all this work in especially in this area, somebody has just been devastated, if you can put a smile on their face just because they can go in their house and turn a light switch on, it makes it so worth it," Savage said. It's his third time on a trip like this and Kman's sixth. “You never want somebody to suffer property damage or heaven forbid illness or injury or even worse than that but that's why we’re here," Kman said. At this point, how long they'll be away has not been determined. It'll depend on the work which needs to be done.
