The family of Chino XL confirmed the Bronx rapper died by suicide. “With the most profound sadness imaginable, we share the news that our beloved father decided to end his own Life,” Chino XL’s family said in a statement obtained by TMZ. “It’s been the most painful and personal experience of our lives but in honor of Suicide Awareness Month, we decided to share this truth. Dad would hope that this news may help someone else stay alive.” Born Derek Keith Barbosa in the Bronx, Chino XL was raised in Orange, N.J. His family posted on Instagram that he died on July 24, leaving behind five children, five grandkids, his longtime partner and his mom. They asked for privacy at the time and didn’t list a cause of death. He reportedly lived with depression and heart problems and died from hanging at the age of 50. Chino XL became nationally known after his 1996 song “Kreep” started getting radio play. His death was mourned by hip-hop giants including Chuck D of Public Enemy. “This ones a tough one,” he posted on Z, calling Chino XL his “brother in rhyme & Art.” Chino XL’s acting credits include parts on “CSI: Miami,” Reno 911″ and “The Young and the Restless,” according to his IMDB page.
