Between fantasy football and sports betting, sometimes fans forget the men under the helmet are real people. That’s what makes the Detroit Lions’ series “Beyond” so important. Players have a chance to tell their own stories in their own words in as much detail as they want. In the latest article, Detroit Lion Khalil Dorsey explains both his “why” and his “how” when it comes to the game of football. While media like “Hard Knocks” episodes have given fans a peek behind the curtain of life as a football player, that hardly grazes what some of these guys go through to get to where they are today. For Dorsey, his path to Detroit was a winding one that included a multitude of debilitating injuries. “Returning from IR – I don’t even know how to explain it. You have to crawl out of that hole every single time you get hurt, and it’s really hard to do. You don’t feel like yourself initially. Some guys come back just fine, others never do,” he explains. It was a constant battle to both get healthy and get a call from a team. All the while, bills had to be paid. He writes he signed up to drive for Uber and Lyft — evening applying to work at a hotel the same week the Lions called him. He was signed to the practice squid to end the 2022 season and to a Reserve/Future contract in early 2023. “The business of football became exhausting. It felt like I was in an abusive relationship with the game. I remember asking, ‘Do I want to keep doing this to myself? I love football, but football doesn’t love me back. Do I want to be done?’” Dorsey wrote. It all came down to one moment in Hawaii, watching the waves crash along the shore, when Dorsey finally discovered his “why.” You can read his piece here — and I recommend taking advantage of the few times we can hear players tell their full stories written in their own words. And onto the rest of your notes. The latest “Sights and Sounds” is out featuring a mic’d up Taylor Decker. “The Lions offense, which hasn’t been great, will get going here.” CBS Sports’ Pete Prisco is behind Detroit this time around in his weekly picks. Very cool to see Jameson Williams yet again support other Detroit sports. ️ Waymo in the building!#RepDetroit #OnePride pic.twitter.com/hsg3eWeYMG— Detroit Tigers (@tigers) September 26, 2024 Checking in on Lion turned Cowboy Amani Oruwariye: Amani Oruwariye with a game sealing interception.
