SPEEDWAY, Ind. — A man has been charged after causing a deadly crash in May, the Speedway Police Department announced on Tuesday. Court documents show that 21-year-old Lamont Roberts faces charges of causing death while operating a vehicle with a Schedule I or II controlled substance in the blood (Level 4 Felony), as well as reckless homicide (Level 5 felony). According to SPD, officers were called around 1 p.m. on May 15 to the area of N. High School Road and Embassy Row on the report of a personal injury crash. Upon arrival, officers discovered that two vehicles were involved in the crash — a black GMC Terrain and a blue Honda CRV, manned by an Uber driver. SPD said that five seconds before impact, the GMC was going 75 mph in a 35 mph zone. One passenger of the blue Honda suffered fatal injuries, later identified as Josimer Franco, while the driver in that vehicle only suffered minor injuries. Police found the driver of the black GMC and identified him as Lamont Roberts. He was checked by medics on-scene, but denied additional care, SPD said. An officer then spoke to Roberts, providing him a consent form related to fatal/serious bodily injury crashes. Roberts then stated he did not want to take a test, admitting he had smoked marijuana that morning. This led the officer to obtain a search warrant for a judge to gain access to Roberts' blood. After analysis, two separate kinds of Delta-9 THC were found in his blood. Online court records show that Roberts' initial hearing is scheduled for Oct. 1. If convicted, he could face up to 12 years in prison. A mugshot for Roberts has not yet been provided.
