JAMES ISLAND, S.C. (WCBD)- Residents on James Island are waking up to some damage Friday after Helene lashed the area with heavy rain and strong winds overnight.
Town officials said they are in close contact with county and regional emergency management officials and are currently working to assess the extent of damage.

High winds caused some trees to topple over and limbs to break, including one that fell onto a Rivers Point Row apartment complex. Scattered debris can also be seen in some neighborhoods.
"Given the situation, we would encourage anyone who can stay home this morning to do so," Mayor Brook Lyon said. "If you do have to travel, please use extra caution on the roads and don't drive through flood waters."
Town offices will reopen for normal business at noon on Friday.
