Season 4 of The Cam Thomas Show will debut on Wednesday, Oct. 23 at State Farm Arena when the Nets open their 2024-25 campaign against the Atlanta Hawks. Fans who have followed the 22-year-old throughout his professional career cannot afford to miss an episode, because this could be his best individual season yet. Former Nets head coach Jacque Vaughn has been replaced by Jordi Fernandez. Former star forward Mikal Bridges is no longer on the roster. Thomas will have more stability from a coaching standpoint and will be Brooklyn’s unquestioned No. 1 scoring option. And if the young scoring guard handles his business, this could be his true breakout year. ESPN’s Bobby Marks thinks that Thomas has a chance to lead the NBA in scoring this season. In 66 games last season with a career-best 51 starts, Thomas averaged 22.5 points, 3.2 rebounds and 2.9 assists while shooting 44.2% from the field and 36.4% from deep. He averaged a career-high 31.4 minutes per game and, team struggles aside, made the most of his opportunities. However, when speaking to the media on Thursday, Fernandez discussed his expectations for Thomas and how he can take the next step in his development. “I think development is the number one thing,” Fernandez said. “For everybody, not just the young guys, but also the veterans. Everybody has to get better. There has to be a plan. And my conversations with Cam are: ‘Can I help you be more efficient of a scorer, right?’ If you look at his numbers, the less he dribbles, the more efficient he is. “His superpower is to score the ball, and what we need to do is to help him do that, but in an efficient way. Same as his playmaking, because he attracts so much attention, teams are going to try to blitz him, load to him, how he can kick that and create more assists, potential assists. It’s on me and the rest of the coaching staff to help him, and we believe he can take that next step.” Thomas is eligible for a rookie extension and the Nets will have a three-week window, starting Tuesday, to negotiate a new deal that will begin during the 2025-26 season. Whether a deal gets done will come down to “timing” from an organizational standpoint. And if no deal is reached, Thomas will likely enter next offseason as a restricted free agent. “There are several guys on our team that we could be having those same conversations with,” Marks said. “So, we’ll certainly engage with agents and with the players, and I think it’s important to always have that door open. The window will certainly close on the extension if we can’t get something done, but I think it’s important for those players to know that we care about them… They’ll be weighing up what we’re doing, just the same as we’re going to be figuring out if they’re the right fit long-term and so forth, and if now is the right time to extend all of our guys.”
