SALT LAKE (KHON2) — When new pickleball courts at Ke'ehi Lagoon Beach Park were announced back in March 2023, players were hoping to enjoy the game all day and into the night, but many players said they've been left disappointed for over a year. According to pickleballers, there's just one problem – the light's don't work. "By 7:00, the sun goes down. It's the only time we can play till. Ever since they built this place there was no light at all. Like over a year, I believe, that they haven't done anything," stated George Manzano, a frequent player at Ke'ehi Lagoon. According to the Department of Parks & Recreation, the lights went out when the copper wiring was stolen. "It's pitch black. You don't see anything here. With the lights on, it's to prevent any of the riffraffs come over, but having the lights off, it's a safety issue," said pickleballer, Don Faumuina. Some frustrated with new stadium progress, but it’s still scheduled to open as planned Even with 12 courts, it's still not enough to accommodate everyone who wants to play a couple rounds, according to Faumuina. When it's busy, players said multiple groups of pickleballers will line up for a court. By the time it's their turn to play, there's only a few minutes of sunlight left. "One time, I was hear at five. Court up at 6:30, 6:30 sunset. So I had about ten minutes of playing time," stated pickleball player Harrison Ho. Players like Faumuina decided to start a petition to get the lights back on the courts. "You know how it is sometimes when you'll ask for some things and it just kind of get's put on the wayside and maybe perhaps starting a petition together, we can get things moving," said Faumuina. The City said it is working with the Oahu Pickleball Association to fix the lights, but they don't have a timeline for when work will be done.
