A 78-year-old Willoughby woman died Sept. 26 in a two-vehicle wrong way head-on crash on the Ohio Turnpike in Amherst Township, according to a news release from the Ohio State Highway Patrol Milan Post. Rita M. Robinson Whitman was pronounced dead at the scene, the release said. The crash occurred at 8:52 p.m. on the eastbound lanes near milepost 142. A white 2021 International tractor-trailer was operated by a 33-year-old McComb, Ohio, woman, traveling east in the right lane, according to the release. Robinson Whitman was driving a gray 2015 Toyota Rav4 west, traveling the wrong way in an eastbound lane, and struck the tractor-trailer in the middle lanes, the release said. LifeCare Ambulance paramedics transported the McComb woman to University Hospitals Elyria Medical Center with minor injuries, according to the release. The crash remains under investigation. The Highway Patrol was assisted on scene by LifeCare Ambulance, Amherst Fire/EMS, Lorain County Coroner’s Office, Ohio Turnpike Commission and Interstate Towing.
