FRESNO, Calif. (KSEE/KGPE) - A local hero was recognized Wednesday for his bravery during a fire in June where he saved a life and potentially others' in Fresno. On Wednesday, the Fresno Fire Department took the time to honor and recognize members of the department as well as community members whose actions were stand-outs— one of whom was Pedro Piña. According to Deputy Fire Chief Devin McGuire, on June 22 around 9:20 p.m., units responded to an apartment complex at 849 S. Alder Ave. When units arrived they found the initial call had seemingly been resolved. "The crew of Engine 15 responded Code 3 to the incident arriving just six minutes later. Upon arrival, the crew conducted a size-up of the structure while Ladder 87 focused on assessing a burn victim found at the scene. [The fire had been extinguished]," Deputy Fire Chief McGuire said. Piña recalled he was on his way out when he saw flames flickering from the window of a nearby unit followed by screams. "I was gonna go to the movies and I heard screaming. Then I looked up, I saw the window, there was flames, there was somebody screaming real loud so I reacted," Piña explained. Without hesitation, McGuire says Piña grabbed a fire extinguisher, forced himself into the unit, and rescued the injured victim out of his unit to safety. "While many might have hesitated, Pedro acted without a second thought. Grabbing a fire extinguisher, he forced the door to the burning unit. Inside he found the injured occupant and quickly helped him to safety," McGuire said. Piña says the rush of adrenaline kept him from thinking of anything but the task at hand— saving the victim's life. "I wasn't thinking about [getting hurt]. I was just thinking about him more. I didn't think about myself at that moment," Piña said. Piña went back inside to check for other victims before dousing the rest of the flames with the fire extinguisher, preventing further damage to the apartment and potentially saving lives, Mcguire reports. "Because of Pedro Piña's quick thinking and fearless actions, [the victim] who had sustained burns to his hand was able to receive immediate medical attention," McGuire said. Because of his heroic actions and selflessness, Deputy Fire Chief Devin McGuire recognized Piña. "Today we honor Pedro Piña whose courage, selflessness, and decisive action saved a life. Fresno Fire is proud to present Mr. Piña with the Civilian's Lifesaving Award for his exceptional bravery and lifesaving efforts," Deputy Fire Chief McGuire announced. Piña adds while he is humbled to have been honored for his bravery, the act itself was selfless. "It's an honor to me that I got this— and I didn't really expect anything to come back to me," Piña said.
