SAN FRANCISCO (KRON) -- One of the most high-ranking executives at one of the preeminent AI companies announced her resignation Wednesday. Mira Murati, the Chief Technology Officer at OpenAI, announced she would be leaving the company in a post on X. "After much reflection, I have made the difficult decision to leave OpenAI," Murati wrote. "My six-and-a-half years with the OpenAI have been an extraordinary privilege. While I'll express my gratitude to many individuals in the coming days, I want to start by thanking Sam (Altman) and Greg (Brockman) for their trust in my to lead the technical organization and for their support throughout the years." Murati went on to explain her departure, saying that she was stepping away because she wanted to "create time and space to do my own exploration." It's hard to overstate how much Mira has meant to OpenAI, our mission, and to us all personally." Murati spent six-and-a-half years with the company and briefly served as CEO after Altman was temporarily ousted last year. Her departure is the latest leadership at the San Francisco-based AI company. In August, Brockman said he was "taking a sabbatical" through the end of the year. Another OpenAI co-founder, Ilya Sutskever, left in May to launch his own company. Days after Sutskever’s departure, his safety team co-leader Jan Leike also resigned and leveled criticism at OpenAI for letting safety “take a backseat to shiny products.” Murati praised the company upon her departure, saying the company's work had made "cutting--edge AI research intuitive and accessible."
