ATLANTA — Truist Park and the Atlanta Braves continue to vex the Mets, but after only one game, the team will now head to Milwaukee to continue their quest for a postseason berth where a domed ballpark renders inclement weather moot. Hurricane Helene forced two of the Mets’ three games against the Braves to be rescheduled. The decision was made Wednesday afternoon, despite forecasts having shown this storm heading for Georgia for weeks. Monday will feature a straight doubleheader beginning at 1:10 p.m., with the second game beginning 40 minutes after the last out of the first one. The Mets dropped the series opener, 5-1, on Tuesday night. They currently hold the second Wild Card spot with a 0.5-game lead over the Arizona Diamondbacks and are 1.5 games ahead of the Braves. The team plans to depart Atlanta on Thursday morning, attempting to get to Milwaukee before the worst of the storm hits the area. The pitching lineup has not been decided for the weekend, but it’s likely they use left-hander Sean Manaea on Friday in the opener against the Brewers to be able to use him in a potential Wild Card game. However, manager Carlos Mendoza said the team isn’t looking that far ahead yet. “The only thing we can do is control the things we can control,” Mendoza said Wednesday at Truist Park. “That’s what we’ve got.” This leaves the Mets in an unenviable situation of having to play 18 innings and traverse the country one day before potentially beginning a postseason series. Should the Mets clinch a playoff spot this weekend or Monday, they would then have to depart Atlanta to fly back to Milwaukee, or to Southern California to face either the San Diego Padres or the Los Angeles Dodgers, who are currently battling for the NL West title. The Braves, however, don’t have to leave. They finish their season at home against the Kansas City Royals this weekend. The rain is scheduled to stop around midday Friday, which should allow them to play all three games. Mendoza likened the situation to the one they faced in August when they played a 10-game road trip in Anaheim, St. Louis, Denver and Seattle, with the St. Louis stop being a one-day sojourn to make up a game from April. “We’ve been through a lot this year and this is nothing new for us,” Mendoza said. “We’ll be ready to go.” That trip wasn’t exactly a banner moment for the Mets. They went 4-6, dropping a series to the Angels and were swept by the Mariners. This creates some different clinching scenarios this week. The Mets can earn a Wild Card berth by finishing ahead of the Braves, or by finishing tied or ahead of the Snakes, since they hold the tiebreaker with their series win in Phoenix last month. The simplest way forward for the Mets is to win in Milwaukee and hope they get some help from the San Francisco Giants and Padres, the last two opponents for the Diamondbacks this week. A Monday doubleheader may not be necessary for seeding if the Wild Card spots are decided this weekend. At that point, it’s at the discretion of the commissioner. As of Wednesday afternoon, the Mets did not have any indication as to whether or not Rob Manfred would make them play for seeding. The one silver lining for the Mets is that this will give Francisco Lindor time to rest his back. The shortstop was in the lineup Wednesday before the game was postponed. “He was feeling good today, so that’s why he was in the lineup,” Mendoza said. “He’s going to work out, get in the cages, move around and see how he continues to progress. But yeah, I could see this. We’re buying an extra day here.” There are several variables with four teams vying for only three postseason spots. The Mets are focused only on themselves as they prepare for the Brewers. “I’m not going to get too far ahead right now,” Mendoza said. “We’ve just got to concentrate on the next series. We didn’t play today, we’re not going to play tomorrow and like I said, we’ve got to take care of business there over the weekend. Then, we’ll worry about the doubleheader here when we see what kind of shape and where we at by then.”
