WICHITA, Kan. (KSNW) - Tuesday night, candidates for Sedgwick County's District 2 commission seat shared their views on housing issues. The event was co-hosted by KSN as part of the Wichita Journalism Collaborative's coverage of homelessness and affordable housing. The forum featured Democrat Sarah Lopez and Republican Jeff Blubaugh. Both are running for Sedgwick County Commission's District 2 seat, which Lopez currently holds. Blubaugh is a former Wichita City Council member. Questions asked by journalists and audience members at the forum went over topics ranging from property taxes, to homelessness approach, to public transportation. Housing is one of the main issues on the table in this upcoming election. "You can definitely see there's a big work that needs to be done with all the housing," said Aidan Mays, Sedgwick County District 2 resident. Local first responders heading to Florida for Helene relief Mays asked commissioners at the forum to talk about plans to improve housing. He said he often sees city-owned abandoned housing in his area. "I'd want to see the county almost work like hand in hand with it because, yes, this is a city issue but also a county issue," he said. One question posed to Blubaugh and Lopez was if they support a more strict stance toward clearing homeless encampments and restricting the use of public sidewalks. "We do have to have some boundaries with the homeless," Blubaugh said. "You know, when I was first on the Wichita City Council in 2013, we started the homeless outreach team, and what has happened, it has just brought in more and more homeless." Lopez says it's too early to have an opinion on clearing sidewalks and encampments. "Right now if we did that where to we take them? There is not a place where we can move them for their safety or for the safety of others," Lopez said. Both Blubaugh and Lopez said they want to ease the property tax burden. However, Blubaugh says the right approach is to change property valuations, which come from the state, to be more fair. Lopez, on the other hand, said the county needs to consolidate duplicate services between the County and the City.
