PENNINGTON — When a team has lost its star center back to injury and gets out shot by a whopping margin of 26-1, you’d expect it would lose by a lopsided margin. Note the operative word there is “expect” because it was a much different kind of game on Tuesday as the Pennington girls soccer side couldn’t score until it finally got two goals in the final 11 minutes to down Peddie, 2-0, in a MAPL match. In addition to playing hard, there were two main reasons Peddie (3-3-2) was able to hang in against the Red Hawks (3-2). One was Peddie’s sophomore goalie Sadie Lawrence. She was credited with 11 saves, including several of the spectacular variety. In addition to cutting down angles and displaying sure hands, what Lawrence also did very well is anticipate where the Pennington shots would go. The other was Maggie Gladkowski. A left back at the start of the season, Gladkowski was moved to center back when standout Reshem Trainor was injured last week and was lost for the season. Gladkowski anchored the Peddie back line and repeatedly was in the right position to clear the ball and hold Pennington off the board until late in the second half. “Losing Trainor was a huge loss for us, but Sadie and Maggie were tremendous today” said Peddie coach Matt Roach after his team dipped to 3-3-2. “They both played great”. Pennington coach Bill Hawkey was also quick to point out the incredible game Lawrence had in the Peddie goal. “Some of those saves she made were just unbelievable,” he said. “And a lot of them were on point-blank shots. Obviously, we didn’t finish very well for most of the game, but she (Lawrence) had a lot to do with that. It would have been a different result if not for her.” Pennington’s passing game was in fine form all afternoon and although it took 70 minutes, it finally broke through on a low hard shot to the opposite corner by Olivia Wang. Less than five minutes later the lead was up to 2-0 with 5:17 showing on the clock. This goal started with a run down the right wing by Maya Raghunandanan. From there Raghunandanan put in an accurate cross to the center of the box. With Lawrence forced to cover the near post against Raghunandanan, the result was a wide open net and a simple tap in by Sara Chrnelich for the insurance goal. While its failure to score for most of the game was frustrating, it was impressive the way Pennington was able to create all those chances with consistent build ups starting in midfield. “We have a very good freshman class and you can see we are starting to get a little bit of rhythm,” said Hawkey. “I like where we are at.” Peddie (3-3-2) 0 0 — 0 Pennington (3-2) 0 2 — 2 Goals: Wang, Chrnelich. Assists: Irani, Maya Raghunandanan. Shots: Ped-1. Penn-26. Saves: Ped-Lawrence 11. Pen-Dwyer 0, Brochon 1.
