"He's the first person in the gym," said Ryan Cordova assistant principal and head basketball coach at PVHS. "He's a great teammate." School leaders confirm senior and varsity basketball player Nicholas Manzanares died in a car crash over the weekend. Sandoval County Sheriff's Office would only confirm it's investigating a rollover that killed the driver on I-25 early Sunday morning. Cordova said Manzanares was an accomplished student and dependable teammate. "He's a good friend...these kids have all grown up together for so long and he's always the first person to offer help," said Cordova. Passionate about basketball, he said Manzanares even went to a point guard college in Colorado over the summer. He was a leader on the team and shooter on the court, fittingly called "sniper" by teammates. "Somebody that can just shoot it really well. He hit a lot of threes for us, won a lot of games for us," said Cordova. He recalled a tight game last year when Manzanares made a three-pointer in the last moments of the game. "We're up two and Nick shoots a three and we're like 'no'…and Nick drains a three and I'm like 'yes,'" he said. Counselors and community partners are at the school to support students and staff. A memorial taking up three tables sits in the gym. Next to his favorite things and snacks are notes from friends telling Manzanares he is loved, missed, and never forgotten. "He just always had this huge smile on his face," said Cordova. He said this next basketball season, the team is honoring and playing for Manzanares, #12. "I was fortunate enough to spend a year with him and he became really, really close to me," said Cordova. "Those moments you'll never forget." The basketball team held a candlelight vigil on Sunday night. The school is planning more services in the coming days.
