NEW MEXICO (KRQE) – It's well known around New Mexico but chances are you won't find many books about Navajo cuisine. Now, a New Mexico-born woman is looking to change that by sharing generations of recipes in a new cookbook. "I'm just so excited to share my culture with the world," said Alana Yazzie, cookbook author.         Story continues below Money: SNAP benefits, eligibility requirements expanding in New Mexico Trending: Officials searching for missing Silver City firefighter Podcast: Heinrich & Domenici face off in 2024 U.S. Senate race News: NM CYFD considers rule changes to broaden hiring pool, opponents express concerns Alana Yazzie grew up cooking Navajo dishes with her mother as early as she can remember. Born and raised in Fruitland near Farmington, she said that family tradition is what she's now sharing in a new and rare Navajo cookbook. "A lot of times when it comes to Native or Navajo culture, you know, a lot of these traditions are passed down orally so there's not really a resource to open like a book," said Yazzie.            There are sixty recipes in "The Modern Navajo Kitchen" including how to make blue corn tortillas and biscuits, along with a few New Mexico-inspired dishes.  "Like green chile stew, there's a recipe in there for that. There's also roast mutton sandwiches which is a big thing on the Navajo Nation of having like roast mutton with green chile on a tortilla or fried bread," said Yazzie.        Yazzie hopes the book also serves as a resource for other Diné'and Navajo communities that didn't grow up with a chance to learn traditional recipes, adding that she's grateful for all of the support she's received so far.  "A lot of times we don't realize how many foods are from Indigenous cultures, you know, they first started in these communities, and you know they've lived on for centuries and a lot of these foods are a symbol of our resilience," said Yazzie.  The cookbook goes on sale in October and they're taking online pre-orders now.
