PORTSMOUTH, Va. (WAVY) -- From Haifa Israel, the sisters of Virginia Beach-based Rabbi Israel Zoberman are terrified that rockets from Hezbollah could bring an end to the legacy their parents — Holocaust survivors — built in Israel beginning in 1949. The brother and his sisters speak by phone each day. Regina Mobley: How close do your sisters, and their extended families, live to the northern border [with Lebanon]? Rabbi Zoberman: I would say for a rocket in seconds, otherwise by car it's an hour-and-a-half or so. A number of people have gotten hurt and there is smoke billowing everywhere from buildings. As thousands are being evacuated and hundreds have been killed, the sisters and other family members huddle in a shelter to stay safe. "My sisters are the lucky ones because they have this protective we call Mamas, a special enclosed area within the apartment that protects them in case there is a collapse of the building, God forbid," Zoberman said. According to the New York Times, on Sunday, Hezbollah launched more than 100 weapons into Israel. Israel has not claimed responsibility for a deadly pager and walkie-talkie attack last week, but it is taking credit for a missile attack Sunday in Lebanon that killed 500 people. Zoberman said his home country is on the cusp of a regional war. "No one can tell what any minute will bring," he said. "Obviously, Hezbollah is looking to Iran, its major sponsor, for orders and it's up to Iran if they want to escalate. Obviously, Israel and the United States and our allies would have to be involved even further." As the Norfolk-based carrier Truman heads toward the hot spot, the world is watching as the one-year anniversary of the deadly Oct. 7 Hamas attack on Israel is less than two weeks away.
