Disclaimer: All persons are presumed innocent until proven guilty. NEW ORLEANS (WGNO) — A DOTD driver is dead following a crash that occurred on Tuesday afternoon in the Gentilly area of New Orleans. According to the New Orleans Police Department, the crash, which happened on Interstate 610 West at the St. Bernard Avenue exit, was initially reported around 1:49 p.m. and confirmed around 2:33 p.m. Father, son accused in Desire-area shooting wanted by New Orleans police The Louisiana State Police carried out the following investigation and reports that the DOTD driver, identified as 23-year-old Eric Anthony Jr., of New Orleans, was performing his duties as a motorist assistance patrol operator when the crash occurred. Anthony, who was operating a fully-marked 2018 Dodge Ram MAP emergency vehicle, was reportedly helping the driver of a disabled 2007 Chevrolet Avalanche, and parked behind the Chevrolet on the shoulder of the road with traffic cones laid out behind his vehicle, an illuminated signboard on top of it and emergency lights activated. LSP officials say that Anthony was standing near the back of the Dodge, getting equipment out to tend to the Chevrolet's flat tire. At the same time, 26-year-old Oscar G. Perez-Moran, of Arabi, was reportedly driving a 2020 Nissan Rogue west on I-610 when, for unknown reasons, he allegedly veered off the road and onto the shoulder, hitting Anthony and the back of the Dodge before rotating and hitting the Chevrolet as well. The driver of the Chevrolet was uninjured and wasn't in the vehicle when the crash happened. Perez-Moran was unrestrained and sustained minor injuries. He was taken to a local hospital for treatment. St. Bernard Parish detective injured during chase, crash ending in New Orleans Routine toxicology samples were taken for analysis. Perez-Moran was arrested and will be booked into the Orleans Parish Jail on negligent homicide and other traffic related charges once he's released from the hospital.
