MEMPHIS, Tenn. — The Mud Island Amphitheater could host a three- or four-day concert series soon to activate the site ahead of possible redevelopment, the Downtown Neighborhood Association told City Council members. The pop-up concerts with local acts would raise money for new seating, estimated at between $750,000-$850,000. The cost of the event would be covered by the downtown association, not by the city, and the DNA would handle liability insurance for the events. The Mud Island pop-ups might be a catalyst for the amphitheater, the way previous events have jumpstarted redevelopment at the Tennessee Brewery and Crosstown Concourse. The additional activity could mean more money for downtown businesses and ultimately, the city, supporters said. Can Mud Island Park be brought back to life? Jerred Price with the DNA said the group just needs a green light from the city to get it going. His group is targeting November for the concerts. An engineer who studied the amphitheater judged it structurally sound, Price said. The DNA paid for the study. There was no vote required on the presentation. The Mud Island Amphitheater last hosted a concert in 2018.
