MOLOKA'I, Hawaii (KHON2) — The Maui Fire Department (MFD) continues battling a large brushfire on Moloka'i near the airport, which prompted temporary road closures and voluntary evacuations Tuesday morning. Get Hawaii's latest morning news delivered to your inbox, sign up for News 2 You The fire was first reported around 10:30 a.m. Shortly after, door-to-door evacuation warnings were given as a precaution for homes near the fire. Multiple crews responded to the scene with additional backup from the Maui Emergency Management Agency (MEMA). According to Maui County, one structure and one vehicle were consumed by the fire, but there were no reported injuries. "It was about within 200 yards of my family's homestead," stated Maui County Councilwoman Keani Rawlins-Fernandez. "As a councilmember working so closely on the recovery with Lahaina, the PTSD from just that tragedy really built up an anxiety for me." Firefighters will continue containing the fire throughout the night. "It was a big fire. We haven't had a fire in a while. It's really dry right now and if the wind was higher than what it was today and the fire department didn't catch it in time, I think everything would have just went up in smoke," stated Moloka'i resident, Cheryl Puailihua.
