HONOLULU (KHON2) -- Residents near Sunset Beach on Oahu's North Shore are facing a serious threat as erosion has worsened. Denise Antolini, a North Shore community resident and environmental attorney, spoke about the situation. Get Hawaii's latest morning news delivered to your inbox, sign up for News 2 You “We have a disaster unfolding here,” she said. “Two homes are literally falling into the shoreline, creating hazards like glass, metal, and debris.” The problem has persisted for years, but recent conditions intensified the risk. “This is an absolute public health and safety emergency,” Antolini added. Antolini was able to shed a bit of light on the situation and the background that has led to the current emergency. "It's an absolute disaster unfolding in front of our eyes at Kammies Beach." said Antolini "The two houses that are in the video are located right at near Paumela's stream at Kammies Beach. This these are two houses that have been the subject of a lot of controversy because the owner ... the state took enforcement action against him for that." Although authorities have been notified, she expressed frustration over the slow response. Lifeguards were working to keep the public away from the dangerous area. The Department of Land and Natural Resources Division of Conservation and Resources Enforcement went to the site where the two homes are falling into the ocean to assess the situation. Meanwhile, Hawaiʻi State Representative Sean Quinlan has called an emergency meeting. The situation is particularly dire for two homes near Paumalu Stream. “These houses have been controversial due to the owner's actions,” Antolini explained. About a year ago, the homeowner poured concrete on the beach, prompting the state to intervene, explained Antolini. While some of the concrete was removed, an illegal burrito system was installed which has led to further enforcement action. “Now, because of this irresponsible behavior, we see the house falling into the ocean,” she said. Antolini also raised concerns about electrical cesspools and the risks posed by debris in the water. With large swells approaching, she warned, “It’s like a triple whammy disaster unfolding.” Access to the beach has been blocked for months and has made the situation even more urgent. As the erosion crisis continues, the community remains on high alert for what might happen next at Kammies Beach.
