BATON ROUGE, La. (BRPOUD) — Southern University football currently sits at 2-2 entering its bye week. This is a familiar position for the Jaguars. For the past four seasons, they entered week five with a .500 record. There is one interesting aspect of this Jaguars team that makes them stand out compared to last season. Southern's offense has taken a step forward statistically. The Jaguars are averaging more yards, 387 to 346, and points per game, 23.8 to 17.7, through the first four weeks compared to last season. Southern also leads the SWAC in passing yards per game, 268.7, and ranks middle of the pack when it comes to rushing, 119.3, putting them top three in the conference in total offense. These numbers are surprising given the fact that Southern has played three different quarterbacks behind an offensive line that has allowed 10 sacks in four games. The Jaguars offensive line did show improvement against Prairie View, paving the way for the rushing attack with 191 yards on the ground and only allowed two sacks. Southern quarterback Noah Bodden also proved the Jaguars can win with him behind center, throwing for 189 yards and two touchdowns. The junior quarterback still has a turnover issue, giving up the ball six times in four games. "When he's focused and locked in on what he's doing, he's pretty doggone good. So, we want to continue to just keep fixing the things that are not so good, and really encouraging and pushing him to do those things he does well," said Graves. Southern quarterback Zavian Teasett is still nursing an ankle injury he suffered in week three against Jackson State. There is still no specific date on his return, Bodden will remain the starter moving forward.
