BAKERSFIELD, Calif. (KGET) -- A new elections committee has been formed in Kern County. The committee was created to discuss integrity issues with county officials. The committee can then make recommendations to the county and elections department. After months of planning, the committee finally met for the first time this week. It's composed of county supervisors David Couch and Leticia Perez, county counsel, as well as citizens who have shown up to almost every Board of Supervisors meeting asking for more transparency. How do states know you are eligible to vote? Their first topic of discussion was whether to do away with the combination of jobs the Registrar of Voters has in Kern County. Aimee Espinoza, the current Registrar of Voters is also the auditor, controller, and county clerk. These concerned citizens say that's too much for one person to handle. "The concern of the committee is we want to bring best practices into the elections department and we want to point out the deficiencies," said Charles Shinn, a member of the Concerned Citizens Group. Shinn has been speaking at supervisors meetings along with his colleagues on the election integrity issue for months. The committee meets on the third Monday of every month, making Oct. 21 the next meeting date. It's held at the County Administrative building at 1115 Truxtun Ave. Any member of the public can attend and make recommendations. How to register to vote in Kern County "This was really a nice kickoff to say this is an issue we should talk about in a non-partisan way, in a civil manner that helps us improve the process for all the obvious reasons," said Leticia Perez, District 5 Supervisor and member of the committee. One notable no-show at the meeting was Aimee Espinoza, who declined be interviewed for this story. Espinoza did say the reason for her not showing is because she was attending a conference during the time the meeting was held. Espinoza said she does not intend to be present at the next meeting since it is too close to election time. "The purpose of the committee is to suggest recommendations regarding elections. Once those recommendations are made, I will consider them," Espinoza said.
