WASHINGTON (DC News Now) -- More restrooms may soon be built on the National Mall, a welcome plan for those visiting the monuments. The National Park Service (NPS) wants to replace all the existing public restrooms between the Lincoln Memorial and the Washington Monument, installing restrooms all the way to the U.S. Capitol. "It's pretty frustrating because nine times out of 10, I have to change my child on my lap," said Zandra Jones, of Las Vegas, who was at the National Mall for a rally. Police warn community after increase of extortion cases involving explicit photos in Prince George’s County Jones, who used to live in Clinton, Md., was not the only one voicing support for more restrooms. "I'm pregnant right now," said Emma Lackey-Wagoner, of St. Louis, Mo. "So I do have to use the restroom a little bit more often than maybe your average woman." The current public restrooms on the National Mall are at least 50 years old, according to the NPS, which is why it wants to build new ones. "My girlfriend had to walk probably a mile or a half a mile to just use the restroom, so that would be great," Jones said. The National Capital Planning Commission will decide on the NPS request at its Oct. 3 meeting. The first new restrooms could be in place in 2026.
