SAN DIEGO (FOX 5/KUSI) -- The San Diego Wildlife Alliance welcomed the first-ever aardvark born at the San Diego Zoo Safari Park, it announced Tuesday. The calf was born in July to parents Padmae and Azaan. It is the first calf for mom Padmae, who is currently spending time bonding with her baby away from public viewing. However, the zoo said the aardvarks may be seen during select behind-the-scenes tours in the future. (Watch the cute video of the baby aardvark above). They usually start finding food on their own when they are about six months old. As they grow older, the mother teaches her calf how to locate and dig for ants and termites, which are their primary food source, the zoo said. In fact, the name aardvark comes from the Afrikaans term for "earth pig." According to the zoo, an adult aardvark may eat up to 50,000 insects in a single evening. Teams at the San Diego Zoo Wildlife Alliance use behavioral observation and hormone analysis to understand more about the species.
