SAN FRANCISCO (KRON) -- The San Francisco Unified School District is severely in debt. So much so that district officials are considering closing some of its schools. On Monday, San Francisco Mayor London Breed announced the deployment of a “School Stabilization Team,” which, according to the mayor, should help with concerns around “pending school closures, worsening financial outlook and operational issues.”  “With so many questions around SFUSD’s fiscal situation, potential school closures, and outlook for families, I’m deploying top City leaders and expert staff to help the School Board and District leadership navigate the coming months,” the mayor said.   Who exactly is the mayor’s stabilization team, and how will they help address SFUSD’s current “very difficult issues”? San Francisco sees ‘notable change’ in annual HIV diagnoses: DPH report The mayor’s appointed stabilization team broadly consists of “trusted subject matter experts” in the areas of children, families, education, budgeting, and fiscal oversight.   The team will be led by the following members, according to the mayor’s office:  Maria Su, Executive Director of the Department of Children Youth and their Families  Phil Ginsburg, General Manager of Recreation and Parks Department  “Maria and Phil partnered during the COVID pandemic to open community hubs across San Francisco when schools were closed, ensuring that students had places to gather during the day for remote learning, wellness and recreation,” the mayor’s office said in part. This team, the mayor says, will also be able to use $8.4 million of unallocated Prop G funds. The funds, otherwise known as “Student Success Funds,” can be used for “emergent strategies to support the school community.” This funding is in addition to the over $100 million the City provides annually to SFUSD, which includes before and after-school programming, education, arts, athletics, and “enrichment opportunities.”  “Our City will support our children, families, and educators during this difficult time for the School District… I wouldn’t be where I am today without San Francisco’s public schools, and I will do whatever it takes to make sure our current students have the support today that I had growing up here,” Breed said.  SEIU Local 1021, a union chapter representing nearly 1,000 SFUSD employees, is against the school closures, dubbing the move as a "harmful" one. The union told KRON4 it wants SFUSD to prioritize students over the school district's alleged "political agenda" and to address the budget deficit "without a state takeover by cutting the bloated administration and central office." Here is more brief info on the team:  ChiaYu Ma, Deputy Controller, to provide fiscal expertise Susie Smith, Deputy Director for Policy and Planning, Human Services Agency to provide programmatic and family support Hong Mei Pang, the Mayor’s Education Policy Advisor to provide communications, policy and administrative support Amanda Kahn Fried, Office of the Treasurer & Tax Collector to provide payroll and finances support. Shawn Sherbune, Assistant Director, Department of Human Resources to assist with staffing analysis The mayor said the stabilization team will be deployed in the next “several months.”
