WICHITA, Kan. (KSNW) - Wichita Police Chief Joe Sullivan provided an update on the shooting outside Cessna Elementary School at 45th Street South and Clarence that took place on Monday. The shooting involved a couple in a domestic dispute and a deputy. Chief Sullivan said 911 dispatch received reports of the shooting around 9:15 a.m. Monday. A Sedgwick County Sheriff's deputy heard the call and responded. When he arrived, he found a 46-year-old Wichita man with a handgun. The man made statements that the deputy would kill him while pointing the gun at the deputy. Chief Sullivan said the deputy told the man to drop the gun, and he saw the suspect put the gun at the woman's head. In her defense, the deputy fired two rounds. The suspect would not let go of the woman, so the deputy ran up and attempted to disarm him. An investigation found the man and woman live together and have children together. There was an argument in a vehicle that led to the man shooting the woman multiple times. The woman fled toward the school, and the man followed. A USD 259 staff member saw the man approaching and closed and locked the door. "A husband and wife were brought here along with their kids by a Lyft driver. The kids went on into school. We have witnesses telling us the male suspect shot the female in the chest," Sheriff Jeff Easter said on Monday. "The female victim has already been shot multiple times, and the male still has the gun," described Chief Sullivan (Courtesy: Wichita Police Department The victim and the suspect were transported to a local hospital. Chief Sullivan said it's believed both will survive. When the suspect is released from the hospital, he will be booked into jail on suspicion of attempted murder and aggravated assault of a law enforcement officer. "USD 259 staff handled this situation exactly as they should have to limit any risk to students and staff," Chief Sullivan said. You can watch the news conference below:
