TOPEKA (KSNT) - Federal officials say several pet food products are being withdrawn this week due to possible listeria and salmonella contamination. The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) said in a press release that ANSWERS Pet Food of Fleetwood, Pennsylvania is voluntarily withdrawing some of its dog food products as they may be contaminated with salmonella and listeria monocytogenes. This poses a risk to both dogs and dog owners who come into contact with the products. The withdrawn products were sold through online sources and retail locations throughout the nation. No illnesses have been reported so far in connection to the withdrawn pet food. ANSWERS is withdrawing three products, each coming in four pound gallon cartons. These include the following: ANSWERS Pet Food Detailed Beef Formula for Dogs/856554002102 with best by/expiration date of May 6, 2026. ANSWERS Pet Food Straight Beef Formula for Dogs/856554002072 with best by/expiration date of Jan. 31, 2026. ANSWERS Pet Food Straight Chicken Formula for Dogs/856554002065 with best by/expiration date of Jan. 2, 2026 and March 11, 2026. The FDA said the issue with the pet food was found following a test of some of the products, revealing the presence of salmonella and listeria monocytogenes. The voluntary withdrawal was initiated out of an abundance of caution by the company. Lactaid recalled in multiple states due to allergy risk: FDA Listeria can cause dogs to experience diarrhea and vomiting while also carrying the possibility of spreading the sickness to humans. People exposed to listeria may display symptoms like abdominal pain, diarrhea, stiff neck, nausea, confusion, convulsions and more. Young children, older adults, pregnant women and those with weakened immune systems are at greater risk of infection. Salmonella can cause pets to become lethargic or have diarrhea, fever and vomiting. People infected with salmonella might show symptoms of nausea, vomiting, diarrhea and fever. Salmonella can also result in more serious situations such as endocarditis, arthritis, arterial infections and more.
